Home Bubble Tea kits

Homemade bubble tea kits have increased in popularity during the lockdowns of COVID-19 due to the bubble tea shops closing and people craving for the bubble tea drink. These home made bubble tea kits have everything you need to recreate the experience, in the comfort of your own home without needing to spend a lot of time trying to make tapioca pearls from scratch. On the other hand, store-bought bubble tea is quicker to receive as you’re not reading the confusing instructions and is highly convenient when you are out and about. Below are three home made bubble tea products that we have tried and reviewed.

Avalanche is a brand that does bubble tea, hot chocolate and coffees. They started in 2001 in NZ with the idea of making coffee without a coffee machine and have been ran by two owners ever since. One bubble tea kit costs $32 for 5 drinks and comes with pearls, the drink flavour and straws. There is a big variety of flavours to choose from. All you need is a microwave, cup and hot/cold water. You can order online and get it shipped to your house or find it at a local supermarket.

“Avalanche has a good range of flavours and is quite easy to make. The base is a milk tea powder and you add hot water which disolves the powder and the pearls taste like actual pearls. All you need to do is add the pearls into the microwave to soften it. However when you add ice it hardens the pearls. Overall it is quite average for a homemade bubble tea kit. 4/5

BBT club is rated #1 for DIY bubble tea kits. There is various of fruit tea flavours, milk tea flavours and even a brown sugar range. They started off in Australia and now ships all over NZ. The price ranges from $35.95 to $139.95 and the serving size ranges from 10 – 40 servings while giving you the option to add pearls and/or creamer

“This drink is nice and creamy, we tasted the strawberry flavour, and we can add our own sweetness unlike the other bubbles. The tea has a nice smooth consistensy even though it’s just water, it adds a certain texture to the drink. The pearls needed 20mins to cook but they tasted really similar to the ones at the shop. This one takes the time to make but tastes the most similar to real bubble tea and is really filling. It’s not prepackaged as it comes with a creamer, flavouring and sweetener you add, and can customise to your taste. 4.5/5” – Evette
